Tokyo Stocks Jump 8.4% as Trump Pauses New Tariffs
Tokyo’s stock market surged on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension of newly-imposed tariffs, easing investor concerns over escalating trade tensions.
The Nikkei 225 index soared by 2,664.62 points, or 8.4 per cent, reaching 34,378.65 points roughly an hour into morning trading. The rally reflects renewed optimism following Trump’s decision to temporarily ease trade measures that had just come into effect.
Despite the pause, Trump stated that a 10 per cent universal customs duty would remain in place throughout the suspension period. However, he confirmed a significant increase in tariffs on Chinese goods, raising them to 125 per cent.
U.S. markets also saw a strong rebound on Wednesday in response to the tariff announcement.
