Dominic Solanke’s brilliant brace secured Tottenham Hotspur a dramatic 4-3 victory over Manchester United in the League Cup quarter-finals on Thursday, keeping Spurs’ hopes of ending their trophy drought since 2008 alive.
The game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium began with Solanke’s first-half opener, followed by Dejan Kulusevski’s lightning-fast goal just 46 seconds into the second half. Solanke then struck again in the 54th minute, putting Spurs in apparent control with a 3-0 lead.
However, Tottenham’s back-up goalkeeper Fraser Forster’s critical errors invited a Manchester United comeback. Substitute Joshua Zirkzee capitalized on Forster’s intercepted pass to score United’s first, while Amad Diallo blocked another poor clearance to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 20 minutes remaining.
Spurs captain Son Heung-min calmed nerves with a stunning corner-kick goal in the 88th minute, despite protests from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. While Jonny Evans’ stoppage-time header gave United a late consolation, it was not enough to deny Spurs their place in the semi-finals.
The loss marked a third defeat for Manchester United under head coach Ruben Amorim, leaving the team with significant challenges ahead.
