A tourist was killed and another injured in a shark attack near Egypt’s Marsa Alam resort, the Ministry of Environment announced on Sunday. The nationalities of the victims were not disclosed.

The attack occurred in deep waters outside the designated swimming zone near the jetties in northern Marsa Alam. Authorities emphasized that swimming beyond the jetties was prohibited and announced a two-day closure of the area starting Monday.

Shark encounters in the Red Sea are rare, but this marks the second fatal incident in recent times. In June 2023, a tiger shark killed a Russian tourist near Hurghada, a resort city further north along the Red Sea.

Marsa Alam, known for its vibrant coral reefs and marine life, is a popular destination for tourists seeking underwater adventures.

The incident follows a separate tragedy last month when a tourist boat capsized in the area, resulting in four deaths and seven people reported missing.

Authorities have urged visitors to adhere to safety guidelines while enjoying the region’s attractions.
