Tragedy Strikes Again: IGP Warns Against Unorganized Distribution of Palliatives

0 1

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has raised concerns about the unorganized distribution of palliatives and relief items during the festive period. This warning comes on the heels of three tragic incidents that have resulted in the loss of numerous lives.

The most recent incidents occurred on December 21, 2024, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, where a stampede during a food distribution event led to the death of 10 individuals and left many others injured. Similarly, a palliative distribution event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulted in the death of three people and injured several others.

These incidents follow a devastating stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, on December 18, 2024, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children and left many others critically injured.

The IGP emphasized the dangers posed by unorganized distributions, citing the potential for stampedes and other incidents that could endanger lives. He called on government officials, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations to work together to establish a comprehensive and organized framework for distributing palliatives.

The IGP has ordered thorough investigations into these incidents and sympathizes with the bereaved families, wishing those injured a quick recovery.
