A devastating plane crash occurred on Wednesday near the Unity Oil Field in South Sudan’s Unity State, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 individuals.

The aircraft, chartered by the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC) and operated by Light Air Services Aviation Company, was en route to Juba when it crashed approximately 500 meters from the airstrip shortly after takeoff.

Among the deceased are the pilot and co-pilot, with only one known survivor from the 21 people on board. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, though preliminary speculations suggest a possible mechanical failure.

South Sudan has experienced several aviation tragedies in recent years, including a 2018 incident that claimed at least 19 lives and a 2015 crash that resulted in dozens of fatalities.
