Train Accident in Plateau Claims Tricycle Rider, Passenger
A tragic accident on Wednesday claimed the lives of a tricycle rider and one passenger after their vehicle was hit by a moving train at Phototek Junction in the Abattoir area of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when a passenger train travelling from Bukuru to Jos reportedly collided with the tricycle as it attempted to cross the railway track.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as distressing. One of them, Mary Philip, said the train repeatedly sounded its horn, warning the tricycle rider, but he allegedly tried to speed across the track.
“The train was blaring its horn continuously, but the rider still tried to cross. Sadly, the train hit the tricycle and the driver and one passenger died on the spot. It’s very unfortunate,” she said.
Another witness, Mohammed Ibrahim, confirmed that two additional female passengers sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
The spokesperson for the Jos Railway Station, Adam Abdullahi, confirmed the incident. He stated that the tricycle rider ignored warnings from railway officials stationed at the level crossing.
“At the crossing, our official signaled him to stop, but he refused. The train was already in motion at high speed and could not halt instantly, which led to the accident,” Abdullahi explained.
Authorities have urged road users to exercise caution around railway lines and obey all crossing signals to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
