An articulated truck driver allegedly struck and killed a revenue collector on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near New Garage, while attempting to evade dues collection.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement signed by Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Sunday and involved a containerised truck with registration number FST 887 XD. The driver reportedly fled the scene after the accident.
“The revenue collector was fatally struck while crossing the expressway to collect dues, resulting in immediate death due to the severe impact,” Bakare-Oki said.
LASTMA officials quickly responded to the scene, managing the aftermath of the tragic incident. The deceased’s remains were handed over to officers from the Adigboluje Police Division, who are coordinating with the family to facilitate necessary formalities.
The articulated vehicle, which caused significant traffic congestion, was promptly removed by LASTMA personnel and handed over to the police for further investigation.
Expressing sympathy for the bereaved family, Bakare-Oki called on transport unions to educate their members on safer methods for collecting dues, particularly in high-risk areas like expressways.
“LASTMA remains committed to safeguarding road users’ well-being and minimizing traffic disruptions in Lagos. The agency will continue to collaborate with law enforcement to investigate this incident thoroughly and implement measures to prevent future occurrences,” Bakare-Oki assured.
The police are continuing investigations to identify and apprehend the fleeing driver.
