A truck carrying an estimated ₦10 million worth of watermelon overturned along the Nguru–Hadejia Road in Jigawa State, leading to the loss of over 10,000 pieces of the fruit.
The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday near Kachakama and Jibori villages in the Malammadori Local Government Area. The truck, with registration number FGE 592 XB, was transporting the goods from Nguru in Yobe State to the southern part of Nigeria when the crash happened.
Musa Muhammad, the Information Officer for Malammadori LGA, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, attributing the accident to excessive speeding.
The truck driver, Ahmed Ibrahim, and his assistant sustained injuries and were taken to the General Hospital, Hadejia, for treatment.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) responded to the scene, clearing the wreckage to restore traffic flow. The FRSC’s state spokesperson, Yahaya Ibrahim, also confirmed the accident.
