Trump Administration Moves to Repeal Key Climate Rule Empowering EPAL
The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to repeal a foundational climate rule that grants the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The draft plan targets the 2009 “Endangerment Finding,” a scientific determination that greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health and the environment. This rule has served as the legal cornerstone for all U.S. climate regulations over the past 15 years.
Eliminating the Endangerment Finding would severely limit the EPA’s ability to address climate change through emissions regulations. It would also mark a major reversal in federal climate policy, effectively dismantling a core mechanism established under the Clean Air Act following a 2007 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that authorized the EPA to regulate carbon emissions if they were deemed harmful.
Critics say repealing the rule could undermine decades of environmental protections and jeopardize U.S. efforts to combat global warming. The move is expected to face legal challenges from environmental groups, scientists, and states that support climate action.
The EPA has not yet publicly released the draft proposal or commented on the reported plan.
