US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Richard Grenell, a seasoned diplomat and former ambassador to Germany, as his envoy for “special missions,” signaling an assertive approach to foreign policy in his upcoming term.
Trump announced Grenell’s appointment on Saturday via his Truth Social platform, emphasizing the strategic significance of the role. “Ric will work in some of the hottest spots around the world, including Venezuela and North Korea,” he stated.
Grenell, who previously served as acting director of national intelligence, gained recognition for his role in facilitating Serbia-Kosovo peace negotiations during Trump’s first presidency. Known for his outspoken support of Trump’s foreign policy, Grenell has often championed positions that reflect Trump’s priorities, including limiting NATO expansion until members fulfill defense spending commitments.
During Trump’s first term, Grenell famously defended the administration’s calls for NATO allies to meet financial obligations, stating, “Don’t come to the wedding without a gift.”
Trump also announced that Devin Nunes, CEO of Truth Social and a former congressman, will head a presidential advisory board overseeing the US intelligence community. Nunes, a steadfast Trump ally, will continue leading Trump Media & Technology Group alongside his new advisory role.
Grenell’s appointment underscores Trump’s commitment to addressing high-stakes international challenges and strengthening his team of trusted allies as he prepares to assume office.
