Trump Condemns ‘Christian Genocide’ in Nigeria, Threatens Aid Cut, Possible Action
United States President Donald Trump has expressed strong anger over what he described as an ongoing “Christian genocide” in Nigeria, alleging that thousands of Christians are being killed by Islamist extremists.
Speaking during a conservative radio programme on Friday, as reported by Fox News, Trump criticised the Nigerian government for failing to curb deadly attacks on Christian communities, saying the situation was “a disgrace.”
Trump, who had previously designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution, warned that the United States could take drastic steps if the violence persists. He said Washington may consider halting all financial aid to Nigeria and hinted at the possibility of military intervention.
“Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace. They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide, and I’m really angry about it. And we give a lot of subsidies to Nigeria. We’re going to end up stopping,” Trump said.
His comments come amid heightened global scrutiny of insecurity in Nigeria, particularly attacks targeting Christian communities in the northern and central regions.
In recent weeks, the country has witnessed multiple incidents, including the abduction of 315 students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, where gunmen arrived on over 60 motorcycles.
Separately, 25 schoolgirls were kidnapped in Kebbi State, while worshippers were killed and abducted in a church attack in Kwara State, further underscoring Nigeria’s deepening security crisis.
