Trump Hails “Big Victory” as Bipartisan Deal Moves to End US Government Shutdown

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed a “big victory” over Democrats after a bipartisan Senate deal paved the way to end the longest US government shutdown in history.

Speaking at a Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, Trump highlighted that eight Democratic senators had broken party lines to support the compromise, which would fund the government through January.

“Congratulations… on a very big victory,” Trump told Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson during his speech. “We’re opening up our country — it should have never been closed.”

The shutdown has left a million federal workers unpaid, disrupted holiday travel, and threatened food assistance for low-income families. The legislation is expected to move to the House on Wednesday, with the shutdown potentially ending by Friday.

However, the deal has sparked divisions within the Democratic Party. Some senior figures argued the party should have held out for continued health insurance subsidies, a central point in the shutdown negotiations.

Trump also promised to abide by key elements of the agreement, including reversing the firing of federal workers during the shutdown — a key Democratic demand.

The President’s speech drew attention for blending a commemorative Veterans Day event with political messaging. He also proposed renaming November 11 as “Victory Day” for World War I, and May 8 in honor of World War II.

The compromise follows Democrats’ recent election victories in three states, which intensified scrutiny on the administration over rising living costs and government operations.

Trump’s remarks underscore his continued unorthodox approach to combining ceremonial events with partisan politics, a tactic that has both energized supporters and drawn criticism from opponents.
