Trump Launches $1 Million ‘Gold Card’ Offering Wealthy Applicants Faster Path to U.S. Residency
U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced a new immigration initiative dubbed the “Gold Card,” a premium residency pathway designed for wealthy individuals willing to pay a $1 million contribution to gain legal status and a route to American citizenship.
The scheme, unveiled on Wednesday, is accessible through Trumpcard.gov, where applicants can submit a $15,000 processing fee to the Department of Homeland Security before undergoing background checks. Successful applicants must then make a $1 million “contribution,” which the website also refers to as a “gift,” to secure the visa—an upgraded version of the traditional Green Card that permits holders to live and work in the United States.
“Basically, it’s a Green Card, but much better. Much more powerful, a much stronger path,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “A path is a big deal. Have to be great people.”
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick revealed that about 10,000 people had already pre-registered for the Gold Card, predicting far greater demand as the program rolls out. He said the initiative could generate “billions of dollars” while bringing in high-net-worth individuals who, he argued, would boost the U.S. economy.
Lutnick contrasted Gold Card applicants with conventional Green Card holders, claiming—without providing evidence—that the latter earn below-average incomes and may rely more on public assistance.
The Trump administration has consistently tightened U.S. immigration policies, increasing deportations and creating barriers for legal immigration. The Gold Card, however, marks a financialized alternative aimed at raising revenue for the U.S. Treasury, similar to the president’s previously defended tariff strategies.
A corporate version of the program is also available, allowing companies to obtain fast-tracked visas for employees at a cost of $2 million per person.
