President-elect Donald Trump has announced Kash Patel, a loyal ally and former Pentagon official, as his pick to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The appointment, which requires Senate confirmation, signals Trump’s intent to install staunch supporters in key positions ahead of his administration.
Trump shared the decision on his Truth Social platform, lauding Patel as a “brilliant lawyer and investigator” who embodies the “America First” agenda. Patel, known for his hardline stance on the existence of a so-called “deep state” working against Trump, has been a vocal critic of the FBI and its current director, Christopher Wray.
Wray, appointed by Trump in 2017, has faced the president-elect’s criticism over investigations into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and the January 6 Capitol riot. Trump indicated Patel’s appointment would signal a fresh start for the FBI, promising reforms to tackle crime, human trafficking, and drug-related issues.
Patel, the son of Indian immigrants, held various roles during Trump’s first term, including national security advisor and chief of staff to the acting defense secretary. He has written extensively on his belief in a biased bureaucratic network undermining Trump’s presidency.
In a parallel move, Trump also nominated Florida sheriff Chad Chronister to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Chronister is tasked with combating the flow of illegal drugs across the southern border.
Trump’s picks, including Pam Bondi as attorney general, underscore his focus on appointing loyalists to advance his policy goals. Bondi, Chronister, and Patel are expected to work closely to shape a law enforcement agenda aligned with Trump’s vision.
