Trump Pledges Action to Stop UAE Deportation of Afghan Refugees

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday vowed to intervene in the reported plans by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to deport Afghan refugees back to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

“I will try to save them, starting right now,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, alongside a news article detailing the situation.

According to the report by Just the News, UAE authorities recently visited a refugee camp in Abu Dhabi and informed 32 Afghan men, women, and children of their impending deportation. The group, reportedly held at the facility for the past four years, had their passports confiscated without prior notice.

The development has raised alarm among international human rights advocates. Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, urged the UAE government to immediately halt any deportation plans.

“Afghanistan is not safe, and those forced to return are at significant risk of persecution and violent reprisals,” Bennett warned in a statement issued Saturday.

The Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021 following the U.S. military withdrawal and the collapse of the former Afghan government. Since then, rights groups and international observers have consistently flagged severe human rights abuses, particularly against women, former officials, and minority groups.

Trump’s intervention marks a rare U.S. presidential response to refugee issues in the Gulf and comes amid mounting criticism over the treatment of Afghan evacuees who remain stranded in third countries years after the fall of Kabul.
