Turkey Launches Probe After Attack Near Israeli Consulate in Istanbul

Turkish authorities have opened a formal investigation following an armed attack near the Israeli consulate, as tensions remain high amid strained ties linked to the Gaza conflict.

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said three prosecutors, including a deputy chief prosecutor, have been assigned to lead the case.

Security forces swiftly locked down the area around the consulate, sealing off the building and closing nearby roads. Forensic teams in protective suits were deployed to gather evidence and assess the scene.

The U.S. ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, condemned the incident and praised Turkish authorities for what he described as a “swift and decisive response.”

“Attacks on diplomatic missions are attacks on the international order — and an assault on the principles that bind nations together,” he said in a statement posted on X.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry also denounced the attack, commending Turkish security forces for their rapid action in preventing further escalation.

The incident comes against a backdrop of deteriorating relations between Turkey and Israel during the ongoing Gaza war, which has heightened security concerns around diplomatic sites.
