Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Washington on Monday as both leaders were in the U.S. capital for high-level diplomatic engagements. The meeting coincided with Sharaa’s landmark visit to the White House, marking the first trip to the United States by a Syrian head of state in nearly eight decades.

Fidan joined part of the discussions between President Sharaa and U.S. President Donald Trump after receiving an invitation to participate in the multilateral talks. The meeting formed an unexpected diplomatic forum involving Turkey, Syria and the United States at a time of shifting regional dynamics.

The Turkish foreign minister said he was already in Washington for planned talks with senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff and U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack, who also serves as Washington’s ambassador to Türkiye.

Speaking to Turkish media after the talks, Fidan said he conveyed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s greetings to President Trump and outlined Türkiye’s positions on the situation in Syria. He stated that discussions focused on opportunities for trilateral cooperation, Syria’s territorial integrity, post-conflict reconstruction and broader efforts to ensure lasting peace and regional stability.

Fidan emphasized that Türkiye remains a central actor in Syria’s future and will continue diplomatic engagements aimed at securing stability and coordinated regional policy.
