Typhoon Shanshan Strikes Kyushu, Injures Dozens, Disrupts Power and Transport

Typhoon Shanshan slammed into Kyushu, Japan’s south-western island, on Thursday morning, unleashing severe rains and winds. The powerful storm has left at least 54 people injured, according to local broadcaster NHK.

Japan’s National Weather Agency has issued widespread warnings as the season’s 10th typhoon continues to track northward, causing power outages for approximately 250,000 households.

In Nagasaki, nearly 400,000 residents were evacuated as precautionary measures were put into place. The storm also forced significant disruptions, halting train services and leading to the cancellation of numerous flights.

Automaker Toyota has suspended operations at its 14 domestic plants, with plans to resume on Friday.

Typhoon Shanshan made landfall near Satsumasendai in Kagoshima Prefecture, carrying wind speeds of up to 216 km/h and moving north at 15 km/h. NHK reports that the typhoon is expected to affect much of Japan’s archipelago in the coming days.
