The U.S. Air Force will intensify airstrikes against terrorist groups across Africa, targeting high-value threats like ISIS, Gen. James Hecker, Commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA), has said.

Speaking during a digital press briefing at the 2025 African Air Chiefs’ Symposium (AACS) in Lusaka, Zambia, Hecker reaffirmed the U.S. military’s commitment to supporting African nations in the fight against terrorism.

“They are significant high-value targets that threaten African nations and the United States. So we will continue to go after terrorist organizations that pose a threat to our African partners as well as the U.S.,” Hecker stated.

He noted that the U.S. Air Force recently conducted airstrikes against ISIS in Somalia and remains committed to counterterrorism operations across the continent.

Beyond military strikes, Hecker highlighted the U.S. Air Force’s willingness to collaborate with African air forces on security, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief.

Addressing Nigeria’s counterinsurgency efforts against Boko Haram, Hecker pointed out that the U.S. has provided extensive training and equipment to the Nigerian military. However, he emphasized that the AACS was primarily focused on fostering regional cooperation rather than discussing air superiority or military conflicts.

Zambia’s Air Force Commander, Lt.-Gen. Oscar Nyoni, also spoke on the symposium’s role in strengthening regional disaster response capabilities. He stressed that AACS member states could provide critical humanitarian aid, including food supplies and logistics, to countries facing crises.

“With our friends from the U.S. and other member states, we can ensure swift logistics and assistance to any nation in need. The more nations involved, the better we can respond to emergencies,” Nyoni said.

The AACS, an annual forum, brings together African air force leaders to enhance collaboration on security, disaster response, and regional stability.
