The United States has issued a warning to Nigerian students on U.S. student visas: skipping classes or abandoning academic programmes without proper authorization may lead to visa revocation and possible deportation.

U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills, issued the warning during a courtesy visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, on Friday in Abuja.

Ambassador Mills emphasized that obtaining a student visa carries serious responsibilities and must not be taken lightly.

“A student visa is not just a piece of paper — it represents your commitment to a specific programme. If you skip classes or abandon your programme without notifying your school, your visa may be revoked,” Mills stated.

He further warned that overstaying one’s visa or violating its terms could lead to deportation and even a lifetime ban from entering the U.S.

“Do not stay beyond your authorized period of stay. Overstaying can result in serious consequences, including deportation and a permanent ban,” he added.

Mills also highlighted the importance of honesty during visa interviews.

“When applying for a visa, be transparent. Clearly state your reason for travel, how you intend to fund it, and what guarantees your return to Nigeria after your studies.”

He explained that the U.S. aims to uphold the integrity of its immigration system by ensuring that only those who comply with the rules benefit from the visa programme.

“We want to ensure that the few who break the law do not spoil it for others. The student visa programme is for genuine academic pursuits, not to game the system,” he said.

In response, Minister Idris expressed appreciation for the U.S. government’s continued support and emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.

“The U.S.-Nigeria partnership supports the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu. We will continue to collaborate closely with the U.S. to enhance mutual understanding and national development,” Idris said.

He added that the Ministry of Information will work to ensure Nigerians are well-informed about evolving visa regulations and international expectations.

“We’re committed to transparent communication so Nigerians understand what is required of them abroad, especially concerning the new visa policies,” the Minister assured.
