Uganda Landslide Death Toll Rises to 28 as Search Continues

The death toll from last week’s devastating landslide in eastern Uganda has risen to 28, with the bodies of two three-year-old boys among the latest victims recovered, according to police.

The landslide, which struck on Wednesday, buried several villages on the slopes of Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano near the Kenya border, roughly 300 km (190 miles) east of Kampala. Initial reports estimated 17 fatalities, with over 100 people feared missing.

Rescue teams have retrieved more bodies from the mud, police confirmed in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) late Monday. However, dozens of residents remain unaccounted for, and efforts to locate survivors or recover additional remains are ongoing.
