UK Condemns Iran’s 10-Year Jail Term for British Couple as ‘Totally Unjustifiable’

Britain has strongly criticised Iran over the sentencing of a British couple to 10 years in prison, describing the punishment as unjustified and vowing to pursue their release.

The UK’s Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said the sentence handed down to Lindsay Foreman and Craig Foreman was “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable,” adding that the British government would pursue the case “relentlessly” until the couple are safely returned home.

The pair, from East Sussex, were arrested in January 2025 while travelling through Iran on a round-the-world motorcycle trip and were later charged with espionage—allegations they deny. They are currently being held at Evin Prison in Tehran.

Joe Bennett, Lindsay Foreman’s son, told ITV News that the family was informed of the sentence last week and expressed deep concern over the couple’s welfare, describing the judicial process as lacking transparency.

“My parents have now been sentenced to 10 years following a trial that lasted just three hours and in which they were not allowed to present a defence,” he said.

Ahead of the sentencing, Craig Foreman had also appealed to the UK government for help, describing harsh detention conditions, including 57 days in solitary confinement.

The case has sparked diplomatic concern in London, with the UK government intensifying efforts to secure the couple’s release and ensure their safe return.
