UK Denies Russia’s Espionage Allegations After Six Diplomats Expelled

The United Kingdom on Friday dismissed Russia’s accusations of espionage against six British diplomats in Moscow, following the revocation of their accreditation. The British Foreign Office described the allegations as “completely baseless.”

The diplomatic dispute erupted after Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced the expulsion of six UK diplomats, citing evidence of intelligence and subversive activities. In a swift response, the British Foreign Office criticized the move, with a spokesperson stating that the accusations lacked merit.

“The accusations made today by the FSB against our staff are completely baseless,” said the Foreign Office representative. The spokesperson added that Russia had revoked the diplomatic accreditation of the six diplomats in August, but made the announcement on Friday in reaction to actions taken by the UK and other European nations against Russian state activities.

“We are unapologetic about protecting our national interests,” the spokesperson affirmed, signaling the UK’s firm stance on the matter.

Russia, for its part, justified the expulsions by citing documents from the FSB and alleged unfriendly actions by the UK. The FSB claimed the British diplomats engaged in intelligence work and subversive activities, prompting the termination of their accreditation in coordination with the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Tensions between the UK and Russia have been escalating amid wider geopolitical conflicts and accusations of espionage across Europe.
