UK Donates Counter-Insurgency Training Facility to Nigerian Army
The United Kingdom has officially handed over a Counter Insurgency (COIN) training facility to the Nigerian Armed Forces, aimed at enhancing the realism of their training and better preparing soldiers for future operations.
The facility, funded by the UK Ministry of Defence and constructed by a team of British Royal Engineers alongside Nigerian Army Engineers, was inaugurated on Tuesday. It is designed to improve the preparedness of trainees for real-world deployments.
Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, represented by Major General SG Mohammed, and British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter, were present at the inauguration in Ogun State. Brigadier Martin Leach of the UK Ministry of Defence also attended the event, which included a live demonstration by the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Baxter emphasized the UK’s strong commitment to Nigeria’s security and development, highlighting the long-standing defence partnership. He noted that the UK’s support extends beyond training to address the root causes of insurgency and insecurity.
The UK will continue to provide training, equipment, and capacity-building support, fostering enhanced security and stability in both nations.
