UK Imposes Sanctions on Rwanda, Calls for Peace in DRC

The UK government has announced a series of diplomatic and economic measures against Rwanda over its alleged involvement in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Following the recent offensives by the M23 rebel group and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), which led to the capture of Goma and Bukavu, the UK condemned the actions as a violation of DRC’s sovereignty and the UN Charter.

During a recent visit to the region, the UK Foreign Secretary stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict and called for an immediate ceasefire. He urged both Rwanda and DRC to engage meaningfully with African-led peace processes and honor commitments made at the Joint EAC-SADC Summit on February 8.

The UK also announced a £14.6 million humanitarian aid package to support displaced civilians in eastern DRC, where nearly a million people have been forced from their homes and require urgent assistance.

The UK emphasized that while Rwanda may have security concerns, a political resolution—not military action—is the only acceptable solution. It also encouraged DRC to engage in inclusive dialogue with M23 to foster lasting peace.
