UK Launches £1.9M Sankore Project to Boost Tech, Innovation in Nigeria and Ghana

The United Kingdom, through its West Africa Research and Innovation Hub (WARIH), has unveiled the Sankore project, a £1.9 million initiative designed to bolster technology and innovation in Nigeria and Ghana. This partnership aims to foster economic growth by enhancing collaboration between government, industry, and nonprofit organizations.

According to a statement from the British High Commission in Nigeria, the Sankore project will work closely with the governments of both nations to support nonprofit organizations, including UN agencies, in developing innovative solutions. Named after the historic West African center of learning, Sankore is set to establish new partnerships that will drive science, technology, and innovation.

UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins, officially launched the initiative during a press conference in Accra on September 17, 2024. He encouraged nonprofits to submit proposals that will strengthen the UK’s partnership with West African nations, emphasizing that “this initiative is about working together to build a global technology sector, providing opportunities for growing economies to thrive on the world stage.”

Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, highlighted the project’s significance, noting that it presents a crucial opportunity to advance Nigeria’s innovation landscape and foster sustainable growth. Similarly, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, stressed the UK’s commitment to driving innovation and economic development in the region.

The Sankore initiative is part of a broader UK-Africa Technology and Innovation Partnerships Programme and complements other UK-supported initiatives aimed at boosting private sector growth across West Africa. Organizations interested in participating can apply by October 25, 2024.
