The United Nations has renewed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. This pledge was reiterated by the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, during a news conference in Abuja, marking the 79th UN Day.

Fall emphasized Nigeria’s crucial role in the global success of the SDGs, stating that, “The UN cannot achieve these goals globally if Nigeria does not reach them.” He noted that the “Pact for the Future” outlines five priority areas: SDG financing for development, international peace and security, science and technology innovation, youth engagement, and strengthened global governance.

“Through our partnerships with the Nigerian government, development partners, and civil society, we are committed to aligning SDG efforts in the country,” Fall said, highlighting the importance of collaborative action over reliance on humanitarian aid.

UNDP’s Country Resident Representative in Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah, emphasized the future-focused approach, which prioritizes science, technology, and digital innovation. Attafuah announced the establishment of 10 “university ports” by year’s end, creating hubs where young Nigerians can develop and test ideas, with plans to expand to 36 hubs over the next three years.

In addition, Attafuah pledged UNDP’s support for Nigeria’s climate resilience through emission reduction efforts tied to national development goals.

Supporting social justice, the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Country Director for Nigeria and West Africa, Vaneessa Phala-Moyo, highlighted ILO’s long-standing commitment to Nigeria’s Decent Work Programme. Partnering with organizations like the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, and NECA, the ILO aims to address labor priorities and promote fair work standards.

The UN’s collaborative programs in Nigeria underscore the importance of sustainable and inclusive development to achieve the SDGs by the target date.
