The Senate of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has approved a revised academic calendar for the 2024/2025 session, alongside other key resolutions, during its 187th Regular Meeting.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, the university’s Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, confirmed that 192 members attended the meeting both physically and virtually.
Among the major decisions reached, the Senate scheduled the next convocation ceremony and conducted the election of a new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic). Prof. Abubakar Abba of the Department of Political Science emerged as the successful candidate.
Additionally, the Senate passed a unanimous vote of confidence in the University’s Governing Council, chaired by Air Vice Marshal Saddiq Kaita (Rtd), commending its fair and transparent selection process that led to the appointment of Prof. Aisha Maikudi as Vice Chancellor.
“The process was widely acknowledged as fair, transparent, and credible, culminating in an outcome that has been universally accepted,” the statement read.
The Senate congratulated Prof. Maikudi on her new role and pledged full support in advancing the institution’s vision. It also strongly condemned individuals attempting to tarnish the university’s reputation through misinformation and blackmail.
“The Senate unequivocally condemned the actions of certain individuals who, driven by personal interests, sought to tarnish the reputation of the university through the dissemination of falsehoods, calumny, and blackmail via the media,” Yakoob stated.
In response, the Senate urged the university’s management to take necessary disciplinary actions against any individuals or groups engaging in misconduct or activities that could undermine the institution’s integrity.
