UNICEF Calls for Amplified Support to Protect Girl-Child Rights

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has emphasized the need for amplifying the voices of the girl-child to secure a future where her rights are fully protected.

Celine Lafoucriere, Chief of UNICEF’s Field Office for South-West Nigeria, made this statement in celebration of the International Day of the Girl-Child, observed globally on Oct. 11. The 2024 theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” highlights the importance of giving girls the platform to lead and be heard.

Lafoucriere noted that the day serves as a key moment to honor girls’ leadership and bring attention to the challenges they face. She stressed that many girls worldwide are deprived of their rights, limiting their opportunities and futures.

“When girls succeed, we get closer to achieving global development goals,” Lafoucriere stated, adding that evidence shows the boundless potential of girls when given proper support and resources.

She further emphasized that the theme aligns with UNICEF’s findings, showcasing girls’ resilience and optimism, even in the face of adversity. Despite confronting significant challenges like child marriage, abuse, and lack of access to education, girls remain hopeful and actively work towards a better future.

Globally, concerning statistics reveal that one in five young women aged 20-24 were married as children, and one in four married or partnered adolescent girls have experienced abuse. Additionally, girls are disproportionately affected by health issues like anemia and HIV, with 75% of new adolescent HIV infections occurring among girls.

Lafoucriere concluded, “Being a girl should not limit one’s potential, but that remains the reality for millions worldwide.” UNICEF is calling for greater support to empower girls and protect their rights.
