The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has banned all social activities on its campuses from extending beyond 6 p.m., following a violent incident that claimed a life during a student event.

In a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Egwu, the management said the decision was taken after the September 12 tragedy, when a businessman, Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, was stabbed to death during a bonfire night organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies students’ association.

According to the university, the event was hijacked by miscreants from a neighbouring community, who instigated the violence.

“Henceforth, the UNN management has directed that all such activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit. Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m.,” the statement read.

The management expressed regret over the incident and assured that measures were being taken to prevent a recurrence. It further reaffirmed the university’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff.
