US Collaborates with Nigeria on Counter-Terrorism Efforts, General Langley Announces

General Michael Langley, Commander of the United States Africa Command Marine Corps, revealed on Thursday that the US is actively consulting with Nigeria to bolster counter-terrorism efforts. Langley also addressed the recent withdrawal of US troops from a base in Niger, a move prompted by demands from the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), Niger’s ruling military junta following the 2023 coup.

During an online press briefing, Langley emphasized that the US military’s role in West Africa focuses on supporting local nations in their fight against terrorism, with operations conducted at the invitation of African countries. He highlighted a strategic shift towards empowering African-led security initiatives, stressing the importance of local leadership in addressing critical security challenges.

Langley noted that the US forces are pivoting to collaborate with countries in coastal West Africa that share democratic values and face similar challenges. He reaffirmed that the US is committed to engaging with African nations to counter terrorism and other security threats, while decisions on establishing new bases or outposts will depend on specific requests from these nations.

The general emphasized that the AFRICOM approach is to support African partners in achieving stability and prosperity through a strategy of development, defense, and diplomacy.
