US Reverses Visa Restrictions on Ghana, Restores Five-Year Multiple-Entry Visas

The United States has lifted its visa restrictions on Ghana, restoring eligibility for five-year multiple-entry visas after an agreement between both countries on the acceptance of deportees.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development on Friday, September 26, noting that the decision was communicated by US officials on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Ablakwa described the move as the outcome of “months of high-level diplomatic negotiations,” adding that Ghanaians will now benefit from “enhanced consular privileges.”

The reversal follows Ghana’s decision to accept West Africans deported by the US, a policy linked to President Donald Trump’s broader immigration crackdown, which has included “third-country” deportations—sending migrants to nations where they may have no direct ties.

Earlier in June, Washington restricted most visas for nationals from Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Nigeria to three-month, single-entry permits. The new development restores Ghana’s access to longer-term visas.

So far, at least 14 West Africans have been deported to Ghana under the agreement, though both governments have withheld details of the arrangement.
