US Senate Approves Bill to Prevent Government Shutdown

0 1

The United States Senate early Saturday passed a bipartisan spending bill to avert a government shutdown, sending the legislation to President Joe Biden for final approval.

The bill temporarily funds federal operations and disaster relief, sidestepping President-elect Donald Trump’s demands for a debt ceiling increase to be included. The measure ensures government operations remain open through the Christmas holiday season.

The House of Representatives had overwhelmingly approved the bill earlier, with a 366-34 vote. Despite some uncertainty stemming from Trump’s insistence on tying the debt ceiling to the spending package, the Senate passed the measure 85-11, just before the midnight deadline.

“This is a good outcome for the country,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said, expressing relief after the vote. He noted that he had spoken with Trump, who reportedly approved of the resolution.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer confirmed the successful passage, stating, “There will be no government shutdown.”

The agreement marks the third attempt by Johnson, the embattled House speaker, to secure a funding plan. His leadership faced challenges from within the Republican Party, with deficit hawks opposing any measures that might increase government spending or debt.

President Joe Biden, who maintained a low-profile role during negotiations, is expected to sign the bill into law, officially ending the risk of a shutdown.

The development raises questions about Johnson’s ability to manage internal GOP divisions and navigate pressure from Trump and high-profile figures like Elon Musk, who influenced legislative strategies from afar.

With government operations secured for now, attention turns to potential further conflicts over the debt ceiling in the new year.
