US Urges Syrian Forces, SDF to Avoid Escalation as Damascus Pushes Integration Deal

The United States has called on Syrian forces and other armed groups to avoid actions that could destabilise the fight against Islamic State (IS), as Damascus moves to consolidate control over former territories held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

In a statement on Monday, US officials reaffirmed appreciation for partners, including the Iraqi government, for their role in ensuring the enduring defeat of IS. US Central Command later confirmed that senior US official Mr Cooper had held talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

During the call, Mr Cooper outlined Washington’s expectations that Syrian forces, as well as all other armed actors, should refrain from any actions that could interfere with stability or counterterrorism efforts.

On Tuesday, the Syrian government announced a ceasefire with the SDF after seizing large areas of territory previously controlled by the group in northeastern Syria. Government forces were seen entering key locations, including the Al Hol camp and Shaddadi prison, following the SDF’s withdrawal.

Damascus has given the SDF a four-day deadline to agree to integrate into the Syrian state, a move the United States has urged the group to accept.

The SDF, which played a central role in the US-led campaign against IS in Syria, has long enjoyed American backing. However, that support appears to be waning following the emergence of a new Syrian government.

US envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, said on Tuesday that the SDF’s role in leading the fight against IS “has largely expired,” noting that Damascus is now willing and positioned to take over security responsibilities.

“Recent developments show the US actively facilitating this transition, rather than prolonging a separate SDF role,” Barrack said.

Syria’s new government was formed after the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad was toppled by rebel forces 13 months ago, ushering in a new and uncertain political chapter for the country.
