The Holy See has appointed Archbishop Gabriele Caccia as its new ambassador to the United States, a role that carries significant diplomatic and religious influence.

As the Vatican’s representative in Washington, the envoy is responsible for conveying the priorities of the Catholic Church to the White House. Over the years, Vatican ambassadors have often challenged or engaged with policies of various U.S. administrations on issues affecting the Church.

Beyond diplomacy, the Vatican’s ambassador also plays a crucial role within the American Catholic community. The envoy recommends U.S. priests who could be appointed as bishops, a responsibility that influences the leadership of the country’s roughly 72 million Catholics.

Caccia, who hails from Milan, previously served as the Vatican’s ambassador to Lebanon. He also spent seven years as the third-ranking official in the Vatican’s powerful Secretariat of State, one of the central governing bodies of the Holy See.

The Holy See and the United States formally established diplomatic relations in 1984 during the presidency of Ronald Reagan.

Caccia’s appointment marks a notable first, as none of the previous six Vatican ambassadors to Washington had previously served as the Holy See’s representative to the United Nations.
