Fashion designer and influencer Veekee James has opened up about a deeply painful period in her life, revealing that false rumours about her marriage almost led her into depression.

Speaking candidly on The Nancy Isime Show alongside her husband, Femi Atere, Veekee addressed allegations that she “snatched” him from a friend — a claim she says was entirely untrue and emotionally damaging.

“I think it was a story about how I was stolen from a friend and we were sleeping with each other,” she said. “So many of them were lies.”

According to Veekee, the weight of these rumours shook her mental health and threatened the image she had worked hard to build.

“It almost put me in depression. That was the first time I truly understood what people mean when they say they’re depressed,” she said.
“I remember locking myself in my room for two days, crying and praying. I told God, ‘You know the truth—if these are lies, help us get through this without it ruining my brand.’”

Veekee said it was faith and prayer that helped her recover from the emotional toll, calling the experience a turning point.

“I prayed and waited on God. The way He brought me out of it was like a miracle. Eventually, I was even able to laugh at the stories.”

She also spoke on how she handles online criticism and controversy, noting that she often reflects on negative feedback to evaluate her own behavior.

“Even when my brother advises me not to check the comments, I do,” she said. “If I’m trending, I want to know why. I ask God to help me see whether there’s something I need to change or learn.”

Speaking about her marriage, Veekee said she sought divine confirmation before tying the knot with Femi.

“When I met Femi, I knew he was the one. But I wanted God to confirm it. When He did, my ears were blocked—and they’re still blocked till today,” she added with a smile.

Looking ahead, Veekee shared her vision for motherhood, stating she has no plans to shield her future children from the spotlight.

“I plan to raise kids who are visible role models in society,” she said. “They’ll show their talents to the world—I don’t have kids I’m going to hide.”

Femi Atere, who also appeared on the show, described himself as a private person, unfazed by online criticism.

“I’m more of a behind-the-scenes person,” he said. “My wife is expressive and in the spotlight. I’m reserved and always behind her. What people say online doesn’t bother me.”
