Violence Erupts in Georgia, Injuring Protesters and Police

Clashes between protesters and police in Georgia have left several injured amid escalating tensions over disputed election results and the country’s ties with the European Union, the Interior Ministry reported Monday.

The ministry confirmed that 21 police officers sustained injuries from stones, fireworks, bottles, and iron bars during the latest round of violence, raising the total number of injured officers to 113 in recent days.

The number of injured protesters remains unclear.

Media reports indicated that police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators, while protesters erected barricades in defiance of law enforcement efforts.

The unrest comes after Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili on Sunday called for fresh parliamentary elections following widespread allegations of electoral fraud.

The ruling Georgian Dream party was declared the winner of the October polls, but opposition parties have rejected the results, with opposition lawmakers refusing to accept their mandates in parliament.

The political turmoil has further strained Georgia’s internal stability, as the nation grapples with its future direction and its relations with the European Union.
