Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday met with traditional leaders and representatives of the Kpaduma and Guzape communities to address concerns over an ongoing road construction project and the evacuation of affected residents.

The meeting, held at the FCT Minister’s conference room in Lifecamp, Abuja, was convened to de-escalate tensions around the continued presence of villagers in areas earmarked for major infrastructure development aimed at improving traffic flow and urban connectivity in the capital.

Wike acknowledged the historical and emotional ties the communities have to their ancestral lands but appealed for understanding, noting that some development efforts require difficult trade-offs for the greater public good.

“This is about building a better Abuja for all,” he said. “We are not here to displace anyone unjustly. We will ensure your people are properly compensated and provided with legal documents for their new homes.”

The Minister assured the traditional leaders of the government’s commitment to fairness, promising that all affected individuals will be compensated. He cited the resettlement of the Gishiri community in Katampe as an example and pledged that Right of Occupancy (R of O) certificates for resettlement areas would be issued without delay.

Wike also announced an upward review of the compensation rate, directing the FCT Resettlement Department to re-evaluate existing figures to reflect a fairer package.

“If they are earning N50, give them N100,” he instructed. “The current rate is too low. Increase it.”

He clarified, however, that compensation would apply only to structures located along the road corridor and not to the entire communities.

Responding on behalf of the communities, the Sapeyi of Garki, Alhaji Usman Nga Kupi, expressed appreciation for the Minister’s openness and willingness to engage the people directly.

“We are grateful for the Minister’s assurance and the respect shown to our people,” the Sapeyi said. “We will support this effort in the interest of peace and progress.”

The chiefs of Kpaduma and Guzape echoed the sentiment, pledging cooperation with the resettlement process for the sake of development.

Also present at the meeting were the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu; Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Richard Yunana Dauda; and other senior FCT officials.

Both sides agreed to maintain ongoing dialogue to ensure a smooth and respectful transition for all families affected by the project.
