Zambia Strengthens Surveillance at Borders to Prevent Mpox Outbreak

Zambia has ramped up its surveillance efforts to guard against the spread of mpox, a disease currently affecting neighboring countries.

Though Zambia has not yet reported any confirmed cases, Minister of Health Elijah Muchima announced that the government has bolstered monitoring, particularly at border entry points, to prevent the introduction of the virus. So far, 37 suspected cases have been tested, but all results returned negative.

“The rise in mpox cases in neighboring countries, coupled with significant cross-border movement, puts Zambia at increased risk,” Muchima stated while addressing Parliament. He emphasized the government’s proactive approach, stressing that enhanced preventive measures and preparations are underway.

More than 200 healthcare workers have been trained in mpox case management across the country. Additionally, the government is procuring highly sensitive testing kits and upgrading border screening tools. Public health campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the disease have also been launched nationwide.

Mpox, or monkeypox, is a contagious disease caused by the monkeypox virus, primarily spread through close contact. Symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, and a skin rash. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently warned of an increasing trend in mpox cases across the continent.
