Zambian authorities have arrested two individuals in Lusaka for allegedly attempting to use witchcraft to harm President Hakainde Hichilema.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the arrests of Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, 42, and Leonard Phiri, 43. The suspects have been charged with professing knowledge of witchcraft, possession of charms, and cruelty to wild animals.
“The suspects were found in possession of various charms, including a live chameleon, and are alleged to be practicing witchdoctors,” Hamoonga stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the pair had been hired by Nelson Banda, the younger brother of Emmanuel Banda, a former independent member of parliament. Nelson Banda is alleged to have promised the suspects a payment of 2 million Zambian Kwacha (approximately $7,000) to execute their mission.
Hamoonga disclosed that Nelson Banda is currently on the run, and efforts are underway to apprehend him.
The case has sparked widespread attention in Zambia, with authorities emphasizing their commitment to protecting the president and ensuring justice is served.
