Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has commended voters for peaceful Local Government Council election in the state.

Lawal gave the commendation shortly after casting his vote at the Women Center Poling Unit in Gusau on Saturday.

Lawal, who was accompanied by his wife, Hajiya Hurriya Dauda, expressed satisfaction with the turnout of voters across the state.

He said that the reports he received across the 14 Local Government Areas of the state showed that the exercise was going on peacefully without a hitch.

“You know, elections are all about people and development, the election process starts from LGs to the state.

“The LG poll is important with local government councils being the third tier of government and most closer to the people.

“I am emphasizing on the peaceful conduct of the exercise. Based on the report I received from the 14 LGAs of the state there is impressive turnout,” Lawal said.

The governor also urged the voters to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the period of the exercise.

“I believe the peaceful process is going to yield positive and credible outcomes,” he assured.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that despite the LG election in the state, people are going on with their normal daily activities.

NAN however, observed that some of the polling units opened behind schedule due to late arrival of election materials.

Some of the voters in the affected polling units had left before the arrival of the election materials, while low voter turnout is observed in Tudunwada, Samaru, Gadabiyu and Damba areas within the state capital.

Some of the voters who spoke to NAN attributed the low turnout to the late arrival of electoral officials and voting materials in their respective polling units.

NAN reports that 12 Political parties are participating in the LG polls.
