The Pakistani High Commission in Nigeria has called on the United Nations, human rights organizations, and the media to take decisive steps in addressing alleged oppression in Kashmir.

Speaking at an annual private ceremony held at the high commission in solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Rt. Maj.-Gen. Sohail Khan, emphasized the need for global intervention.

“Kashmir Solidarity Day serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where the fight for self-determination has deeply impacted innocent lives,” Khan stated.

He urged the international community, including the UN and civil society organizations, to uphold their responsibilities by taking action against what he described as a “rule of tyranny and oppression” in the region.

“The United Nations has passed multiple resolutions affirming that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir must be determined by the will of its people, through a free and impartial plebiscite,” Khan noted.

The envoy also cited reports from UN bodies and special rapporteurs detailing alleged human rights violations in the region, while condemning restrictions on press freedom.

“Media is under immense pressure in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, as reflected in India’s ranking of 161 out of 180 countries in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index,” he said.

Khan described Jammu and Kashmir as “the world’s most militarized zone and the largest prison on earth,” reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people through diplomatic channels.
