Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has cautioned his followers against turning their passion into an “unholy obsession,” emphasizing that faith is not measured by familiarity with him or his ministry.

In a post on his X handle, Bassey stated that not knowing him or other young gospel ministers does not make anyone less of a Christian. He also noted that choosing not to participate in his midnight Hallelujah Challenge does not diminish one’s faith.

“Please, let’s be careful and guided so that we don’t turn our passion into unholy obsession,” he wrote. “There are many Christians who have never heard of me or my music, and that does not make them any less Christian.”

He referenced Romans 12:3, urging believers to remain humble and not think too highly of themselves or others based on ministry affiliations.

Bassey also advised his followers not to look down on those who do not participate in the Hallelujah Challenge, just as those who abstain should not judge those who join.

“Apples don’t grow everywhere. It doesn’t mean the places apples don’t grow are bad. It may just not be apples’ environment,” he explained.

Despite his cautionary message, Bassey announced the return of the Hallelujah Challenge after a short break, inviting participants to join in worship.

The renowned gospel singer, known for songs like Imela, Onise Iyanu, and Olowogbogboro, has established himself as a leading figure in Nigerian gospel music, blending jazz, worship, hymns, and medleys. He was recently invited to minister at the U.S. Presidential inaugural prayer breakfast.
