Uganda’s Health Minister, Jane Ruth Aceng, has announced the discharge of eight patients who recovered from Ebola, while 265 contacts remain under strict quarantine.
The country declared an outbreak of the deadly haemorrhagic fever in January after a male nurse at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala succumbed to the virus.
Speaking at a press conference, Aceng confirmed that all eight patients who received treatment had fully recovered and were set for discharge.
“These individuals have completed their treatment and will be discharged today,” she said.
She added that 265 people identified as contacts of the infected individuals were being closely monitored in Kampala, Jinja, and Mbale.
“None of them have shown symptoms so far, but they will remain under quarantine for 21 days from their last exposure,” Aceng stated.
The current outbreak is linked to the Sudan strain of Ebola, for which no approved vaccine exists, though clinical trials are underway. Available vaccines target the Zaire strain, responsible for previous outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
