Immigration Officer Suspended for Alleged Bribery, Caught on Video

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has indefinitely suspended Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II, Okpravero Ufuoma, following allegations of soliciting a bribe from a traveler. The officer’s conduct, captured in a viral social media video, has drawn widespread condemnation for undermining the integrity of the service.

In a statement released by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, the Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nandap, expressed strong disapproval of the incident, stating that it runs counter to the service’s core values of professionalism and ethical conduct. The video, titled “This is how Immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” sparked outrage online, prompting immediate action from the NIS.

Nandap emphasized that the suspension of the officer is in line with ongoing disciplinary procedures and reflects the service’s commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity. She reiterated the NIS’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, vowing to continue efforts to purge the service of unethical practices.

The Comptroller General also highlighted ongoing reforms within the NIS, including the installation of electronic gates (e-gates) at international airports, aimed at improving service delivery and preventing incidents like the one involving the suspended officer.

Nandap urged the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of misconduct by NIS officers to ensure that the service remains accountable to the people it serves.
