A newly discovered variant of Mpox, which may be more efficient at spreading between humans, has been detected in Africa.
The strain is a mutation of Clade 1a Mpox—an older variant known for causing more severe illness compared to Clade 2, which triggered a global outbreak in 2022, and Clade 1b, which has been spreading rapidly in Africa since 2023.
Health officials are monitoring the situation closely as multiple countries report a surge in Mpox cases. Researchers are investigating whether this variant poses a higher transmission risk or increased health complications.
