Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has filed a N1.1 billion lawsuit against social media critic VeryDarkMan (VDM) over alleged defamation linked to her dispute with former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also known as EeZee Tee.
In a series of Instagram posts last month, VDM accused Chinwo of withholding funds from performances without remitting them to her former label. He also alleged that the singer breached contractual agreements before parting ways with EeZee Concept.
In court documents dated March 3, Chinwo’s lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, described VDM’s statements as “libelous, malicious, and damaging.” The lawyer argued that VDM had no direct involvement in the dispute but portrayed Chinwo in a negative light.
Chinwo is seeking N1 billion in general damages, N100 million in punitive and aggravated damages, and N25 million for legal costs. She is also asking the court to compel VDM to delete the alleged defamatory posts, issue a public apology, and publish retractions in four national newspapers for 14 days.
The lawsuit stems from a long-running dispute between Chinwo and EeZee Tee, with the singer accusing her former label boss of mismanaging $345,000 in earnings from her music and events. While Onyedikachukwu denied the claims, a Lagos federal high court upheld an arrest warrant against him on February 17, with the case set to continue on March 6.
