Fifteen people were injured, including two seriously, after two South Korean military fighter jets accidentally dropped eight bombs outside a designated training range during a military exercise on Thursday, officials said.

According to Yonhap News, a suspected shell landed on a road near a house in Pocheon, about 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) north of Seoul, damaging seven buildings. Fire officials reported that two individuals sustained serious injuries, while others suffered bone fractures. All injured individuals have been taken to hospitals for treatment.

Authorities evacuated approximately 50 residents to a nearby town hall for safety.

Military officials confirmed that two KF-16 fighter jets, conducting a live-fire drill, mistakenly released four MK-82 bombs each outside the designated range. The incident marks the first accidental bombing by South Korean fighter jets to result in injuries.

The South Korean Air Force has launched an investigation and apologized for the incident, pledging compensation for those affected.

“We are sorry for the civilian damage from the abnormal (bomb) release accident and wish for the swift recovery of those injured,” the Air Force stated.

Earlier in the day, South Korea and the United States conducted a joint military exercise 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) south of the inter-Korean border, involving over 160 pieces of military equipment.
