Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has dismissed his chief of staff, Listyo Sigit Prabowo, following his arrest over an alleged wiretapping scandal involving the president and senior government officials.
Listyo, a former national police chief, was arrested alongside two other senior police officers on suspicion of illegally intercepting telephone conversations involving the president, cabinet ministers and other individuals.
The dismissal came on Wednesday, a day after the arrests were announced by authorities.
Presidential spokesperson, Prasetyo Hadi, said the alleged wiretapping was a serious matter that could constitute treason and pose a threat to Indonesia’s national security.
The development has raised concerns over the implications of the alleged surveillance operation, particularly its potential impact on national security and trust within the country’s top government institutions.
