Plane Crash in São Paulo, Brazil, Kills All 61 Aboard
A tragic plane crash in São Paulo state, Brazil, claimed the lives of all 61 people on board, according to Voepass airline. The twin-engine turboprop, an ATR 72-500, was en route from Cascavel in Paraná to Guarulhos airport in São Paulo city when it crashed in the town of Vinhedo.
Footage circulating on social media, reported by the BBC, shows the plane descending vertically, spiraling as it plummeted to the ground. The aircraft was carrying 57 passengers and four crew members, and local authorities have confirmed there were no survivors.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims, while São Paulo state Governor Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas declared three days of mourning in response to the disaster.
Investigators have retrieved the flight recorders, and ATR, the French-Italian manufacturer of the aircraft, has pledged full cooperation with the investigation. Despite the plane crashing in a residential area, no injuries were reported on the ground. Officials noted that only one home in a local condominium complex sustained damage.
This incident marks Brazil’s deadliest plane crash since 2007, when a TAM Express flight crashed and caught fire at São Paulo’s Congonhas airport, resulting in 199 fatalities.
